Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the red worms?


Answer:

The non-biodegradable substances are not converted into compost by the red worms. Example: Iron strips, plastic bags, plastics, aluminium foil, etc.

Explanation: Composting does not occur in non-biodegradable substances.



Question 2.

Have you seen any other organism besides redworms, in your pit? If yes, try to find out their names. Draw pictures of these.


Answer:

We have seen small insects, bugs, beetles and spiders in the pit.

Discuss: Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?


Answer:

No, garbage disposal is not only the responsibility of the government. It is our responsibility as well. It is our duty to keep our environment clean. Along with government and local municipal corporation, we all should throw garbage at proper place. We should think about reuse of waste, so that they can be recycled before throwing them.

Discuss: Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?


Answer:

It is possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage by following 3R’s rule:

(i) Reduce: Minimize the use of things that produce wastes.


(ii) Recycle: Things such as plastic, paper, glass and metals should be separated from garbage and recycled to make new articles instead of dumping them with other wastes, e.g. recycling of paper.


(iii) Reuse: Use the things again and again before throwing them. For example-Bottles of jams and other items can be used in the kitchen for storage.


Question 5.

What do you do with the leftover food at home?


Answer:

Leftover food is a biodegradable waste which can be converted by microorganism into useful products. So, leftover food along with other kitchen garbage such as vegetables peel, are dumped into compost pit to convert them into manure. This manure can be used for growing plants.



Question 6.

If you and your friends are given the choice of eating in a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at party, which one would you prefer and why?


Answer:

We will prefer banana leaf platter(serving plate) because it is bio-degradable and can be easily converted into manure by compositing.

Plastic plate is non-biodegradable which cannot be converted into manure by compositing.

Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.


Answer:

Pieces of papers obtained from newspaper, magazines can be recycled while plastic paper cannot be recycled.

With the help of a lens look at the pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper?


Answer:

The surface of recycled paper is rough as compared to new sheet of paper.

Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.


Answer:
  1. Packing materials like paper packet, plastic covers, jute bags, foam sheet are used to protect the articles.
  2. While packing material like cardboard, tin container and plastic containers are used to facilitate transportation of packed materials.

Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced?


Answer:

Packaging of clothes, toys and shoes can be reduced.

Write a story on how packaging increases the amount of garbage.


Answer:

We all generally pack and wrap the gift in shiny paper to give a nice look to the gift. After use the packing material is thrown in the dustbin which increases the amount of garbage.

Similarly, Cans of jams, plastic bags and other packing materials are used and thrown out after use.



Question 12.

Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers? Why?


Answer:

The use of compost is better than the use of chemical fertilizers because-

• The use of compost is eco-friendly (environment friendly)

• The production of compost is cheap, easy and harmless.

• Compositing helps with the recycling of matter and also in disposable of garbage.
